What is the best floor for a forever home?

Engineered timber, brushed and lacquered, with a veneer thick enough to sand in ten or fifteen years.

The short answer

For a forever home you never want to redo the flooring. I am going engineered timber, because it is so versatile and it lasts a very, very long time.

Whether you have kids, animals or anything like that will determine the wear and tear, and how thick a veneer you want to get. If you have got a dog, you want a brushed timber that is lacquered, so that it hides a lot of those daily scratches, and the lacquer protects it from stains and lets you clean the floor very quickly.

We generally say that in a medium to high traffic area you are going to sand that board down maybe in ten years time. But if it is a low traffic area, no animals, no front or back door where you are walking wet dirt straight in, then that product is going to last a lot longer before it needs sanding.

And just general maintenance and care of the floor will extend the life of it.
